- How large are the grants awarded by Hands Helping Hands?
Individual grants may range from $1,500-$15,000. In 2015, we awarded over 40 grants to organizations.
- Who is eligible to apply for the grant and what are the requirements?
Non-profit agencies that serve the City of Oakland are eligible to apply. If you are not a non-profit, you must have a non-profit fiscal agent.
- What does the “3 Tiered” approach to grant-making mean?
The 3 tiers are designed to build organizational capacity over time by providing various levels of funding, technical assistance and resources.
Tier 1 grants range from $1,500-$4,999 and the application process is simple and straightforward. These awards can be used for, but are not limited to, staff and board development, strategic planning, senior staff recruitment and sponsorships.
Tier 2 grants range from $5,000-$10,000 and require grantees to use a portion of the award to complete an organizational assessment conducted by an outside consultant. This assessment will help the grantees target specific areas that will enhance their capacity for organizational sustainability. These awards can be used for activities such as developing a fund development strategy, completing an organizational financial analysis or developing a transition and succession plan.
Tier 3 grants should move the organization towards a sustainable business model; in collaboration with consultants, grantees will incorporate and implement strategies identified throughout the earlier tiers. Activities could include purchasing an information management system, creating and implementing a policy and procedure manual for accounting or programs and creation of a personnel handbook.
- Can we skip Tiers 1 and 2 and go directly to Tier 3?
No. Our approach is based on a process of building strong partnerships and organizational capacity. It is not guaranteed that one award will lead to another. Some grantees may only be interested in one-time funding. Regardless, our goal is to support organizations in achieving their goals and their progress will be monitored.
- How long should I wait between applications or can I apply immediately after the grant activity has been completed?
Generally, we request that you wait at least 90 days post award before applying for the next Tier. Please contact us if you have a special request.
- What is the timeline for submitting grant applications?
Once your application is received, you will receive a confirmation letter. Applications are accepted continuously throughout the year and awards are typically made within 90 days.
- What are we looking for in grant applications and what are allowable activities?
We would like to fund applications that request resources for strengthening operations and strengthening the organizational capacity to become sustainable. We want to understand what your challenges are and how the funding will be used.
- How will I locate Technical Assistance Consultants to work with us in Tier 2 and Tier 3?
We have several consultants for you to select from or you can locate a consultant that you are comfortable with. The consultant will be paid from the grant award.
